Buick Lucerne Pros

The 2009 Buick Lucerne continues to be part traditional American luxury car, with a back seat spacious enough for adults, and part high-technology flagship. The new 3.9L V6 offers increased power in lower trim levels, while the Super model, with its sportier tuning and Northstar V8 engine, does much to break away from the staid image of Buicks past.

Buick Lucerne Model Highlights

For 2009, Buick's Lucerne is offered in three different trim levels-CX, CXL, and Super. These models cover a broad range of automotive expectations, from a comfortable full-size car to a sporty, loaded luxury cruiser. The CX model has the softest suspension, while the CXL gets a slightly firmer "Ride and Handling" setup, along with 17-inch wheels. Top Super models upgrade to a sport-tuned suspension with GM's Magnetic Ride Control, which uses a fluid with magnetically charged particles to quickly adjust the damping for either quick maneuvers or rough surfaces. CXS and Super models also get StabiliTrak stability control and brake assist in addition to the standard anti-lock brakes. CX and CXL models are powered by an all-new 227-horsepower 3.9L V6. The engine is FlexFuel-capable, which means it can run on gasoline or 85% ethanol. The Super derives its 292 hp from a 4.6L Northstar V8 engine. All Lucernes get utilize a 4-speed automatic transmission. The base CX includes standard amenities like single-zone air conditioning, power programmable door locks, OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. Also standard is Buick's QuietTuning, an engineering initiative that reduces, blocks, and absorbs unwanted outside noises. Luxury features abound on the Lucerne range, and they're grouped into several large packages. The Comfort and Convenience Package, which is standard on the CXL and Super, is available on the CX and brings heated outside mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a garage door opener, cargo net, and power passenger seat. The Driver Confidence Group, which is standard on the Super and available on the CX and CXL models, includes remote start, ultrasonic rear park assist, heated washer fluid, rain-sensing wipers, and StabiliTrak stability control. The Luxury Package, standard on the CXL Special Edition and Super and available on the CXL, brings heated power front seats with lumbar adjustment and memory, a heated leather steering wheel, and more. Finally, the Ultra Confidence Package makes available the side blind zone alert and lane departure warning system in all but the CX model. Standalone options include the blind zone alert and lane departure warning systems, a heated wood steering wheel and heated/cooled seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system (which is available on CX and CXL models and standard on Super models).

Buick Lucerne Model News

The 2009 Buick Lucerne sees few changes overall, but those few are fairly significant for the American luxury sedan. Chief among them is a new, more powerful 3.9L V6, which puts out 227 hp and 237 ft-lb of torque-30 more hp and 10 more ft-lb than the 3.8L V6 it replaces, with the added benefit of slightly better fuel efficiency. Additionally, the engine is FlexFuel-capable, allowing it to run on gasoline or 85% ethanol. The new engine will power CX and CXL models. Lucernes in Super trim have a revised steering setup and recalibrated Magnetic Ride Control suspension for even more driver control and road performance. The CXS trim has gone away, leaving the CX, CXL, and V8-powered Super as the three Lucerne trim choices. All three cars receive increased standard features for 2009.
